Solar Battery House for Indian Army in Ladakh

A solar battery house consisting of mud walls and solar rooftop has been designed to shield Indian Army soldiers from freezing winters in Ladakh. The roofing solution will generate power and is made to withstand heavy snowfall. This battery house pilot project is designed by renowned innovator Sonam Wangchuk using ATUM solar roofing established by Visaka Industries based in Hyderabad.

“ATUM will be an essential roofing solution in the near future for any application that requires power and a roof,” said Vamsi Gaddam, Visaka Industries’ joint managing director. “With ATUM being used extensively as a roofing solution for industrial, commercial and residential applications, we can soon make the solar dream a reality.”
According to the company, This solar roof serves the function of a 20 percent increased installation capacity than conventional solar panels in the same space. It uses indigenous materials for passive solar heating for temperature regulation of buildings and can bear loads up to 450 Kilogram per square feet.

Speaking about the project, Sonam Wangchuk said, “We hope that this will not only become a solar roof, but a solar roof that shelters our forces who normally feel very cold in the Ladakhi temperatures. Another novel idea that we are using is the batteries of a battery house as thermal mass that will keep the heat of the day to last throughout the night.”

Vamsi Gaddam, Joint Managing Director of Visaka Industries, said, “As Ladakh is not connected to the national electricity grid, ATUM aims to provide consistent renewable energy supply to our soldiers. Addressing both roofing and power requirement issues, with ATUM, we can make choices that can save our wallet, planet and the future of the coming generations.”
