Worldwide Protest Demands Immediate Climate action

Thousands of people took to the streets on Friday, September 20 to help fight against climate change ahead of a United Nations summit. Lead by the 16 year old Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, the youth are calling for immediate action from the world’s governments to mitigate global warming, reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, switch to renewable energy and avert environment catastrophe.

Some of the banners carried by this group of students and young activists read “The earth is not expendable. Period.” and “We are missing our lessons so that we can teach you one.”

“Yesterday millions of people across the globe marched and demanded real climate action, especially young people. We showed that we are united and we young people are unstoppable,” Thunberg said at the first of its kind Youth Climate Summit. The global movement which started as a one girl’s silent protest has evolved into a massive international climate strike.

Gov. Cuomo commended those participating in the global climate protests.”Our young people understand climate change is no longer up for debate – it’s a reality based in science – and, like the State of New York, they are taking matters into their own hands to fight it,” Cuomo said in a statement. “I commend the thousands of students who are participating in the Global Climate Strike today and demanding solutions to this crisis before it gets worse.

According to NBC New York, more than 800 events were planned across the United States for the “global climate strike,” while in Germany over 400 rallies have been registered. Protests are staged in many other European countries, Australia, Japan, India, South Africa, and Canada. It follows a similar coordinated protest in March that drew many tens of thousands around the world.

Why should you join?

While the strike in itself is not going to save the planet, it’s a way to show care, take a stand, and demand change. Starting in New York on 23 September just before the UN Climate Action Summit, the climate strike aims to kick-start a massive action plan to show politicians that people need to see results, not words.
